“Give the ones you love wings to fly, roots to come back and reasons to stay.” —The Dalai Lama
On this week where we celebrate both Valentines Day and Family Day, it is only fitting to pay hommage to this extroidinary Mom and her children we had the privilege of photographing a very special Family Ceremony for. “Wait…A Family Ceremony? What is a Family Ceremony?”… I’m sure some of you may be asking that question. When Mom Janice called me about the concept I thought it was the most brilliant idea I had heard. Now that her kids were all grown up, she wanted to have a special ceremony to celebrate a new season for her family — her children coming into adulthood and her eventually becoming an empty nester. I fell in the love with the concept (and this family) immediately and couldn’t wait to photograph this very momentous occasion for them, which was held at the beautiful Rosewood Hotel Georgia, a hotel we are very family with:)
The family decided on getting ready photos at the Rosewood Suite, which conveniently gave us special access to a gorgeous suite and an amazing city view from the hotel’s rooftop.
I have to confess that on the day of the ceremony I was suffering from laryngitis! I could barely talk and provide direction on the poses. Thankfully this beautiful lady was such a natural in front of the camera, needing very little direction at all:) Not only that, I had gotten to know Janice personally over the course of the year and this definitely felt like I was just photographing one of my dearest friends:) And her children? Well they were nothing short of gorgeous to photograph:) The gene pool of beautiful porecelain skin runs super deep in this family, lol!
After photos on the rooftop we headed downstairs to Prohibition Bar for photos, which really brought home the “Gatsby” look and feel that Janice was going for that day. Obviously we weren’t going for your typical family portraits here..
Having photographed many different type of events at this Hotel it was refreshing to see the layout of the room, which was shaped circular so that the family could be situated in the centre amongs their closest family and friends during the ceremony. Just loved all the rich red tones on the decor.
Mom read a special dedication to each of her children, highlighting elements she admired and appreciated. I really loved the sincerity and intimacy of this ceremony and definitely brought tears to many present.
As a dedication to Janice’s empty nesting, each guest was given a sachet of feathers that they were to place inside this nest.
Following the ceremony guests filed into a gorgeous Gatsby-style foyer where they enjoyed refreshments, entertainment & a portrait booth.
We loved all the custom elements that personalized this special occasion. The dance floor was customized with the floral illustrations used in their invitations while guests enjoyed custom treats and cookies made in the shape of their family Pug and many other favourite characters & games the children grew up with.
Each guest received a special personalized note from the host, with the women receiving a pair of pearl earrings and the men cufflinks. Janice’s children were each gifted with a compass — symbolizing a way for them to find their way home if they may feel they’ve lost their way.
As host and emcee Janice made sure all her guests had the opportunity to do some of their favourite family things, which was to sing and dance! By the end of the night not a single person passed up on dancing to old ‘80s and ‘90s tunes:)
I am so looking forward to the next chapter for this family and it has been a privilege to journey alongside them! Janice’s children already have a great start into adulthood, thanks to their loving and generous mom:) Thank you Janice for your trust, ingenuity and for being a force to be reckoned with! It has been a blast so far and can’t wait for more to come:)
